I have been in the construction field about as long as I have been alive. For most people I have always looked at home improvement as a result of NEED. With the expansion of people with larger disposable incomes I have seen a growth in the home improvement projects that are less than a life necessity. Growing up in IOWA as the OLDEST of 17 children, (Yes Seventeen!) the ONLY improvements done were absolutely REQUIRED for peaceful cohabitation.
So when I was first made aware of epoxy garage floor coatings, I asked about the average installed price. I almost couldn’t hand the sample back fast enough. FIVE DOLLARS a square foot, this guy must be crazy! It looked nice, the fact that is protected the floors from chemicals, road salt, gasoline and oil stains was HARDLY a big incentive.
I had grown up in a home where Dad farmed, as a “hobby” Mom always joked. He also did construction work when he wasn’t in the field or doing livestock chores. I had helped him do concrete work and I knew “roughly” what it cost to break out the old concrete and install new. You could almost repour the entire floor for five bucks!
So at first glance this “epoxy” floor stuff was not even on my radar. As with most small towns in Iowa, everyone knows everyone. One day driving around town I saw the contractor who had introduced me to epoxy floors. He flagged me down, I parked and went in the garage he had installed the day before.
WOW, was an understatement. I just couldn’t believe how that coating had transformed a “run of the mill” garage into an unbelievable awesome floor! He showed me some pictures of the floor before he started. I could believe it was the same place because of the state of the rest of the garage. The old floor was cracked and chewed up. The oil stains made the concrete a dingy greenish black color. Now it was this clean smooth beautiful floor!
I at that point knew I had to be involved with this stuff. This product makes such a difference it is SO much more than an “improvement” it is a TRANSFORMATION. I have had homeowners come home after having my product installed and had them stand at their garage door and not speak a complete sentence for several minutes. “Troy this is … I just can’t… this is just…WOW”
So, I know I have taken you a LONG way from where we started but here’s my point. When I first saw this product in “sample” form it was less than appealing. But, seeing it put down and now installing it for nearly 3 years, I have realized that my Black and White, Need or Want analysis is WRONG.
We have customers who live on fixed incomes, who buy this product. We have people who probably don’t have to even call the bank to write out a check for a new car. This product is FAST becoming the Dishwasher of the 21st century. It is not yet a norm but soon every new home will automatically include an epoxy floor.
